If you're traveling to Alaska from the "Lower 48", Alaska Airlines schedules nonstop flights from Los Angeles, Portland, Denver, Chicago, Vancouver, BC and Seattle. In fact, Alaska Airlines schedules more than 16 flights each day from Seattle to Anchorage, plus nonstops to Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka and Fairbanks.

From Anchorage, Alaska Airlines will fly you to the far-flung corners of the state, including Kodiak, Fairbanks, Barrow, Nome, Kotzebue, Bethel, Dillingham, Cordova, Yakutat, Wrangell, Petersburg...even Adak Island. Actually, there is great caribou hunting in Adak!

But Alaska Airlines is not the only airline operating in the state. There are several smaller, regional carriers that provide important air service.

Era Aviation flies from Anchorage to five cities in the southcentral area: Kodiak, Valdez, Cordova, Kenai and Homer. Peninsula Airways flies from Anchorage to Dutch Harbor, King Salmon, Dillingham, Unalakleet, Aniak, Pilot Station and several other locations that are difficult to pronounce--and harder to spell! Up in Fairbanks, Frontier Flying Service provides service to Kaktokik, Nuiqsuit, Barrow, Ft. Yukon, Aniak, Bethel, Galena, St. Mary's and dozens of other small villages.

Many other passenger airlines operate between the Lower 48 and Alaska, including:
a. Delta Air Lines. Delta offers year-round service between Anchorage and Salt Lake City. The carrier offers seasonal service from Cincinnati to Anchorage and from Atlanta to Anchorage.
b. Northwest Airlines. Northwest offers year-round service between Anchorage and Minneapolis. In the summertime, the carrier offers Fairbanks-Minneapolis service. in the winter, Northwest also flies between Anchorage and Maui!
c. United Airlines. united flies nonstop year-round between Anchorage and Denver and between Anchorage and Seattle. In the summer, United adds nonstop flights from Anchorage to both Chicago and San Francisco.
d. Continental Airlines. Continental flies nonstop year-round between Anchorage and Seattle. In the summer, you can fly nonstop to Houston.

e. Sun Country Airlines. Sun Country flies four times each week between Anchorage and Minneapolis during the summer.
f. Condor German Airlines. Condor flies three times a week between Anchorage and Frankfurt, Germany during the summer months. Condor also offers twice-weekly service from Fairbanks to Frankfurt during the summer.
g. American Airlines offers summer-only service from Anchorage to Dallas-Ft. Worth.

In addition to all the Alaska airlines, Anchorage's international airport is the busiest seaplane base in the world (Lake Hood). Also, the airport's freight business is booming, due primarily to hub operations from UPS and FedEx.

Another fact of life when it comes to Alaska airline travel is frequent-flyer mileage plans. Frankly, Alaska Airlines has the best plan for Alaskans. Why? Because Alaska has partnership arrangements with Continental, American, Northwest, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Era Aviation, Peninsula Airways, Horizon Airlines and British Airways. Accordingly, most Alaskans subscribe to the Alaska Airlines mileage plan, in addition to carrying the Alaska Airlines Visa card. This is a quick way to accrue miles. Whether you live in the Lower 48 and like to visit or if you live in Alaska--those miles come in handy for a winter getaway or a summertime fishing trip.

The big reason Alaskans are hooked on air travel, of course, is that there are not that many roads in the state. Major commercial centers including Juneau, Bethel, Barrow, Nome and Kodiak are not connected to any road system whatsoever. If you cannot fly there, you have to take the boat. Furthermore, there are times of the year when the waterways are frozen--so the only way in or out of town is by air. Oh, you can take a snowmachine sometimes, but it's a long, hard ride. Most Alaskans prefer the comfort and convenience of scheduled airline service. That's how most Alaskans get hooked on travel!
